What Happens When the Limit Is Reached?
Once a group hits 1,024 members, no one can join – not via invite link and not by being added directly. WhatsApp shows an error message. The only way to let new people in is to first remove existing members.

WhatsApp Communities: Up to 5,000 Members
For very large communities, WhatsApp introduced Communities. A community is an umbrella over multiple groups:
- Up to 50 subgroups inside one community
- The announcement channel reaches up to 5,000 members
- Members can be active in different subgroups
- Great for schools, clubs, companies or large interest groups
Broadcast List: Alternative for One-Way Communication
If you want to reach many people without a group discussion, a broadcast list with up to 256 recipients is ideal. Recipients see your message as a regular direct message – and can't see who else is on the list.
